About This Down On The Farm - Stack Toy Amigurumi Pattern

This pattern creates a layered stack toy set featuring a hay-covered cone base topped by a rooster, pig, cow and horse. Each animal is worked in body rings so they sit neatly on the cone and stack securely. The pattern uses basic amigurumi techniques and clear round-by-round instructions for consistent shaping.

Includes a cone cover, hay strands, and full assembly directions to finish and stack the toys. Suitable for confident beginners looking to practice shaping and finishing details.

Why You'll Love This Down On The Farm - Stack Toy Amigurumi Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because it turns simple crochet shapes into a playful stack of farm animals that are both decorative and toy-ready. I enjoyed designing body rings that let each animal sit neatly on the cone and add personality with manes, beaks and little tails. The hay skirt is a fun texture play that transforms the cone into a cozy display. Seeing the finished stack come together made me smile β€” it feels like a little farm scene you can hold in your hands.

Switch Things Up

I love how easy it is to customize this stack toy by changing yarn colors β€” try pastel shades for a softer nursery look or bold primaries for a playful kids decor.

You can make each animal larger or smaller by switching yarn weight and hook size; bulky yarn will give a chunky, cuddly version while sport weight makes delicate miniatures.

I often add embroidered details like freckles or stitched smiles to give each animal more personality, especially on the pig and cow snouts.

Consider using safety eyes for sturdier play toys or embroidery for baby-safe versions β€” both change the character of the face dramatically.

For a seasonal twist, change the hay color to white or orange and add tiny holiday accessories like a mini scarf or hat to the top animal.

I sometimes replace the Styrofoam cone with stacked cardboard rings wrapped in yarn for a softer base; just make sure the cone cover still slips on securely.

If you want the animals to be poseable, try inserting thin wire into the legs before stuffing; this lets you arrange them on the cone in different positions.

Try adding tiny felt or crocheted accessories β€” a saddle, a little bow, or a tiny flower crown β€” to make gift-ready, themed stacks.

I like to mix yarn textures like boucle or chenille for accents (mane or hay) to add tactile interest and contrast between animals.

Finally, make a matching smaller stack as a keychain or ornament by using smaller hooks and fingering yarn β€” the pattern scales down nicely.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

βœ— Skipping stitch markers during rounds with repeated increases can cause miscounts and uneven shaping; place a marker at the start of key rounds and recount after increases to stay accurate. βœ— Waiting until the end to stuff pieces can produce lumps or uneven filling; stuff gradually as you work, especially around shaping decreases, to keep the profile smooth. βœ— Not leaving long sewing tails when finishing rounds makes assembly harder later; always leave a long tail on pieces you will sew so you can position and secure them easily. βœ— Tying hay or mane strands too tightly pulls fabric in and distorts the edge; knot strands gently and trim while checking placement to preserve the piece shape.

β€” Assemble Cone Base and Cover :

Info :

* Note: I prefer to leave the packaging plastic cover on my styrofoam cone. I remove the label, but I feel the cone is less likely to break when the plastic is left on. It also makes it easier to slip the cone cover onto the cone. But this is my preference, but do whichever works best for you.

Round 37 :

Slip Outer Cone Cover onto Cone. Holding right side of Cone Base on bottom of Cone, and with the top of Cone towards you, join pieces by working through sts of Rnd 36 of Outer Cone Cover and last Rnd of Base. β€” Hay Strands :

Info :

Cut several strands of Bright Yellow 6-1/2" long. (Hint: I wrap my yarn around a pack of Post-It Notes for the ideal length)

Instruction :

Beg with outer rnd of strands, knot 1 strand of yarn in each fr lp of sts of Rnd 43. Knot 1 strand of yarn in each rem lp of sts of Rnds 37 - 42. Strands shouldn’t need to be trimmed but that’s up to you if you choose to do so.

Note :

When working the Body Rings, the length of the ring should be long enough for the stuffed ring to go around the cone and have the ends meet without stretching the piece too much. If you need to work a couple of extra rnds or a couple less than what the instructions state, that’s perfectly fine.

Assembly Instructions

  • Slip the Outer Cone Cover onto the Styrofoam cone, align the Cone Base on the bottom, join the outer cover and the base by stitching through Rnd 36 of the cover and the last rnd of the base, then continue the joining rnds as instructed to close the cone.
  • Stuff the animal Body Rings and sew the first round to the last round of each ring to form a stuffed ring; insert each ring over the top of the cone and secure by sewing through the inner/outer pieces where instructed.
  • Sew heads to the top of the necks with the beginning chain oriented as stated in each animal section so the neck angle follows the photo references.
  • Position and sew legs evenly around the Body Ring as described in each animal section; pin parts first to ensure symmetry and check photographs for reference.
  • Knot hay strands around the outermost loops of the cone and the rounds indicated (Rnds 37–43) and trim if desired to form the hay skirt.
  • Attach smaller features (eyes, nostrils, snouts, beak, comb, waddles, tails, patches) using long tails left for sewing and a yarn needle; weave in ends and secure firmly.

Important Notes

  • πŸ’‘Pattern is worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated; mark the beginning of rounds with a pin or strand of contrasting yarn to keep track.
  • πŸ’‘Stuff pieces as you go to maintain consistent shaping and avoid lumps; add stuffing gradually especially when closing with decreases.
  • πŸ’‘Pin each part in place before sewing to check placement and symmetry against photos or your own preference.
  • πŸ’‘Leave long tails when fastening off for pieces that require sewing; it makes assembly easier and neater.

This set brings a little handmade farm to life with a playful stack of animals and a fluffy hay skirt. Each animal is designed to sit neatly and stack on the cone for charming display and imaginative play. Have fun personalizing colors and details to make your own farmyard family. πŸ§ΆπŸ„πŸͺΆ
