Why You'll Love This Alan the Lion Amigurumi Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because it brings a playful personality to life with simple stitches and a dramatic wool mane that gives Alan so much character. I enjoy the process of the color changes on the body which create a cute striped t‑shirt and make the piece feel finished and modern. The head and snout construction without sewing means the face looks clean and seamless, which is very satisfying to me. I also love finishing touches like embroidered claws and the haircut step — they let me personalize each lion and make each one unique.

Switch Things Up

I love how easy it is to customize Alan — try changing the t‑shirt stripes to bold colors for a playful look or soft pastels for a nursery friend.

To make Alan larger, use a bulkier yarn and a proportionally larger hook; to make a tiny keychain version, use finer yarn and a smaller hook.

I often swap the mane yarn for a different texture: boucle or mohair gives a wild, fluffy mane while smoother yarn creates a neater look.

For different expressions, adjust the eye placement and how much you pull the thread when creating the facial indentation — small changes dramatically alter personality.

Swap safety eyes for embroidered eyes for extra safety with children and to achieve a different vintage look.

Try adding tiny accessories like a crocheted scarf, a small hat, or a little felt heart to personalize gifts.

If you want a poseable lion, consider adding thin wire to the limb interiors before stuffing to allow gentle positioning.

Experiment with embroidery for the nose and claws — using darker or lighter browns changes the overall contrast.

Change the mane length and fringe style at the end: trim little by little until you love the silhouette and movement.

I also like to make matching sibling lions in different colors so they look like a set — it's a great way to explore color combinations and practice finishing techniques.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

✗ Skipping stitch markers during spiral rounds can make it easy to lose track of the start of each round; place a marker at the first stitch and move it after every round to stay accurate. ✗ Not stuffing gradually leads to lumps or flat areas in the head and body; add stuffing bit by bit while shaping to obtain a smooth, firm result. ✗ Changing color without leaving threads loose can pull and distort the fabric; leave the yarn loose and gently adjust threads after the round to prevent tension issues. ✗ Attaching ears or limbs without pinning first can cause uneven placement; pin parts in position and check symmetry before sewing for a balanced finish.

Recommendations: In order to make these changes of color I didn’t cut the yarn. I only took the precaution to let them loose in order that the knit won't stay tense and then adjusted the threads when doing the change of color. I have had hiding the camel color while knitting the round.

Info :

From now on we will continue in camel color. Cut the natural yarn.

Finish filling the snout and the head tightly before closing. The head must be in good shape. Close with 1 sl sc, hide the thread and cut.

Info :

Note: I like closing with 12 stitches because it keeps a flatten form. If you wish to do it this way you may go taking two stitches together from the front loop till closing the circle. Adjust with a couple of stitches and hide the threads.

Info :

In order to give expression to the face we will push inside the eyes a bit. Introduce the sewing needle with camel yarn closely and both sides of the eye (the yarn must stay on top of the eye) and pull the yarn a little, pass the needle to the other eye. Repeat the same and pull the yarn to adjust. You may repeat once more in order to push inside the eyes as you like.

Info :

Embroider the nose: Start from the 2nd round from the center of the magic ring and take in the central 6sc. Cover the triangle completely with various stitches, make one or two horizontal stitches and finally embroider the vertical line.

Info :

Details: We will embroider the claws on legs and arms when sewed to the body. The author will show this embroidering later on page 11.

— Tail :

Info :

Crochet in camel color as follows:

R1 :

6 sc in a magic ring (6)

R2 :

6 inc (12)

R3 and R4 :

12sc (12) 2 rounds

R5 :

(1 dec, 2sc) x3 (9)

R6 to R19 :

9sc (9) 14 rounds

R20 :

Flatten and knit 4 sc taking together the opposites.

Info :

Fill the base of the tail and then just a bit until half. It must be light. Do not put any polyfiber at the superior part.

Info :

Let's put the hair to the tail like this: Cut wool threads of approx 18 cm long and attach by passing a loop through stitches starting at R5, knot one round only and adjust, repeat all the way around and continue adding threads downwards covering all spaces. Finally cut as long as you like; model the hair as you wish.

— Mane :

Info :

Important considerations: We will use cashmilon wool for the mane in camel color. The mane takes time and patience. Cut strips approx 16 or 17 cm long (author used palm to measure) and use the crochet hook to place hairpieces. The fringe was cut just above the eyes to demarcate the face; trim little by little until you like the look.

Info :

Follow the sequence in order to see how to place each hairpiece: start placing the hairpiece at the inner border of the left ear, on the round where the ears were sewed. Continue around covering all spaces, adjust to avoid visible holes, and complete rows until mane is neat and voluminous. You may work in circular way or divide head in two and finish halves separately.

— Assembling :

Step 1 :

We will start by sewing the head onto the body. The body’s color changing must remain on the back. Use pins to set the head and make sure the eyes to be placed in the center and at the front. We will use the remaining body's thread. Use the sewing needle with it and follow these steps.

Note :

For the assembling of the different parts there are images of another lion included.

Step 1 detail :

The head is centered and resting over the body approx 5 rounds from the end of the last round in natural color from the snout.

Step 2 :

Now let's sew the legs. The legs are placed 3 rounds beneath the first round of the t-shirt. Use the pins in order to center them both sides of the body and placed at the same distance. I also make a couple stitches at the inferior part for more insurance, although they are perfectly sewed when the legs are closed with 1 round of sc.

Step 3 :

The arms are placed underneath the union of the head and the body. As same as we did with the legs, we will make a couple stitches under the arm.

Step 4 :

We will sew the tail one round under the t-shirt.

Step 5 :

We will embroider Alan's claws. We can do it at this point or after making the mane. You may use embroidery yarn, wool or a thinner yarn in brown. Every leg and arm have 3 claws centered. Place each one with 3 stitches of separation taking over 3 rounds in total, as shown on the images.

Step 6 :

Finally we will do the lion's mane: place hairpieces using a crochet hook, cover the triangle formed after delimiting the head, add hairpieces at the inferior part of the beard and between the ears to avoid holes. Add more hairpieces as necessary and then cut and shape the mane.

Info :

Done! Hide any remaining threads, tidy up the mane and trim to achieve the final haircut and shape.

Assembly Instructions

  • Attach the head to the body by pinning it centered about 5 rounds from the last natural-color round of the snout, then sew securely using the remaining body thread and a sewing needle.
  • Position and sew the legs three rounds beneath the first round of the t-shirt, centering them and using pins; add a couple of securing stitches at the inferior part and close leg openings as described.
  • Sew the arms under the union of the head and body, making a couple of hidden stitches under each arm and ensuring the color changes align symmetrically.
  • Sew the tail one round under the t-shirt, then attach the tail hair tuft by knotting yarn strands starting at round R5 of the tail and wrapping to create the tassel.
  • Embroider three claws on each leg and arm using brown yarn or embroidery thread, spacing each claw three stitches apart across three rounds to center them.
  • Add the mane hairpieces with a crochet hook, covering all spaces around the head and beard; trim and shape the mane once all hairpieces are placed.

Important Notes

  • 💡Always crochet tightly and use a hook one or two sizes lower than recommended on the yarn label for firm amigurumi fabric.
  • 💡Work in continuous spiral rounds and use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round to maintain your stitch count.
  • 💡Stuff gradually and evenly for a smooth shape — overstuffing can distort the head or limbs.
  • 💡When changing colors keep yarn tails loose and adjust them at the end of the round to avoid tension buildup.

This Alan the Lion pattern is a heartwarming amigurumi project that brings a playful, handmade companion to life. The mane and color changes give so much personality, and the step-by-step photos help you every step of the way. Make one for a child, a friend, or your craft shelf — and enjoy the stitching! 🧶✂️

FAQs

What size will the finished piece be?

The finished amigurumi measures approximately 30 cm tall when using the recommended DK/semi-thick cotton yarn and a 2.25–2.5 mm hook.

Can I use different yarn weights for this pattern?

Yes, changing yarn weight and hook size will affect final size and appearance; use a smaller hook than recommended for a tight fabric, and expect the lion to scale with yarn thickness.

Do I need prior crochet experience for this pattern?

This pattern is rated intermediate, so basic knowledge of single crochet, increases, decreases and working in spirals is recommended for best results.

How long does this project typically take to complete?

Most crocheters complete this project in 8-10 hours, though time varies with experience and the time required to attach and trim the mane.

Can I substitute safety eyes for embroidered eyes?

Yes — if you prefer not to use safety eyes, embroider the eyes with black yarn instead and follow the pattern's tips for pushing the eyes to add expression.
