The design uses size 2 (super fine) yarn and very small hooks to produce a miniature statue-sized doll. Detailed notes explain yarn-over vs yarn-under methods and recommended hook sizing choices.

Why You'll Love This Sweet Handfuls Baby Jesus Amigurumi Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because it blends crochet with simple craft techniques to create a charming, display-ready Baby Jesus figure. I enjoy how the wet-blocked straw bed gives a realistic textured effect and how the glued-on hair creates soft curls that hold their shape. I love the tiny halo made from metallic yarn β€” it gives a beautiful shine that really finishes the set. I also appreciate giving you options for yarn-over or yarn-under so you can make the items that match your preferred look.

Switch Things Up

I love how easy it is to customize this Baby Jesus set: change the yarn colors to match your decor or holiday palette and make a soft pastel or bright golden version.

You can scale the whole project by adjusting yarn weight and hook size; a thicker yarn with larger hooks will produce a chunkier, more decorative piece while finer yarn makes a delicate keepsake.

I often swap the wooden manger for a painted version or stain it for a rustic look; try distressing or adding a small burlap liner for extra texture.

For the halo, try different metallic shades or combine metallic with a bright yellow back for extra contrast and a unique shimmer.

If you want a different hair style, alter the lengths of the ch pieces or use straight strands instead of curls to create short hair or a simple cap look.

I sometimes skip the wooden craft manger and instead tuck the straw bed into a small woven basket for a different display option that’s quick to make.

Try adding tiny accessories like a crocheted blanket, a button on the diaper wrap, or embroidery details to the diaper for personalization.

For a kid-friendly version, use acrylic yarns and hot glue for faster hair attachment rather than craft glue, and avoid very small parts if safety is a concern.

If you like a more realistic straw look, experiment with different yellow and olive yarn blends for the straw bed and vary the straw length before wet-blocking for a multi-tonal effect.

I also enjoy making a whole set of nativity miniatures using the same scale and repeating the same techniques for other charactersβ€”it’s a great way to build a coordinated display.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

βœ— Skipping stitch markers during continuous rounds causes you to lose track of the start of rounds; place a marker at the beginning of each continuous round to avoid miscounts and incorrect shaping. βœ— Using a larger hook than recommended will make the doll too loose and may show stuffing; use the specified small hooks or adjust all pieces proportionally if you change yarn weight. βœ— Not wet-blocking the straw bed results in unruly pieces of yarn that do not lay flat; wet the straw bed, pin it to foam, stretch and allow to dry thoroughly to tame the straw. βœ— Gluing hair strands without pinning and checking placement can lead to uneven curls; pin the hair in place, check symmetry from photos, then apply glue under strands and re-pin until dry.

β€” Manger Templates :

Info :

You will need 14 craft sticks (popsicle sticks) to construct the wooden manger. Print this page to use as a template. Note: The sticks I used were purchased in the craft section of Walmart (USA). They are approximately 4 1/2" (11 1/2 cm) long, and 3/8" (1 cm) wide, for reference.

Item Template A (Make 2) :

You will need 4 craft sticks. Glue craft sticks in an X position to form Template A.

Item Template B (Make 4) :

Lay craft stick on template, mark lines, and cut as shown. Glue to x-shape to form a double layer for support (you will need 4 craft sticks each, cut the ends to shorter pieces).

β€” Manger :

Info :

The wooden manger is constructed using regular sized craft sticks (popsicle sticks), and craft glue (or wood glue) or hot glue. Craft glue is less bulky, but takes longer to dry so you will need to prop up your pieces when gluing. Hot glue will dry quickly, but seams may not be as tight because it is bulkier. This manger will work for dolls that are made with size 2 yarn, and are roughly 5" long. For a doll made with size 3 yarn, jumbo craft sticks could be used.

Step 1 :

Lay one craft stick on Template A, put a dot of glue in the center. Lay a second craft stick in the glue, forming the X shape. Make 2 of these.

Step 2 :

Using Template B, mark the craft stick and cut on the two marked lines. Cut 4 craft sticks this way to produce smaller pieces to glue onto the X shape for reinforcement.

Step 3 :

Glue the smaller cut pieces onto the X shape to reinforce it. You should end up with 2 double thick X shapes.

Step 4 :

Find a way to prop up the X shapes so they stand. Make sure the distance they are separated is the length of a craft stick (this forms the sides of the manger).

Step 5 :

Starting in the center, put drops of glue on the X shapes. Carefully place the 2 center craft sticks. Continue adding glue and craft sticks so that there are 3 on each half forming the trough. Let the glue dry, remove the items you used to prop it up, and make sure everything is straight.

Info :

I use regular scissors to cut the craft sticks. Sometimes the craft stick will start to split on one side, so I try to make sure the side that splits is the small center piece, and not the side I am using for the craft. Optional: You can paint the wooden manger with craft paint or spray paint if desired, or stain it. The manger can also be left as natural wood.

β€” Straw bed :

Info :

Using Yarn Over (v-stitch) or your preference. Using 2.0mm hook (0.5mm larger hook size than doll). Using Golden Yellow yarn. Note: Turning ch (ch1) will not be included in the stitch count.

Wet Blocking :

Wet the straw bed and wring out the excess water. Lay out the damp straw bed on a thick piece of foam or Styrofoam, and carefully stretch each piece of straw, keeping it straight, and pin down with stick pins. (Fig. 11, 12, 13) Let dry overnight or length of time necessary for it to completely dry. Wet blocking will help the straw to lay more neatly (also see Notes on page 4).

Repeat *Ch15...

20) :

Repeat **Ch17...

21) :

Repeat *Ch15... You should have 21 pieces of hair, with 2 spaces. (Fig. 19, 20)

Note :

The hair piece will be placed on the head with the back side facing out, so that the curls are curling under. Using stick pins, fasten the middle section of the hair piece to the head, carefully centering the 5 shorter strands in front (back strands will reach the back of the neck area).

Assembly Hair :

When you are satisfied with placement, you can glue the middle of the hair piece to the top of the head, and re-pin it. Starting from the center of the back, carefully place glue under the 2 middle strands, gluing down to just above the curl. Pin down each strand. Hair strands should be touching each other and neatly lying flat around the back of the head (except for the curl at the end of each strand which will be loose).

Continue :

Continue to glue down and pin each strand around the back of the head, alternating between each side, until all 10 strands of hair on the back of the head are glued in place. After the 10 strands of hair on the back of the head are glued and pinned in place, find the 6 strands above the ears (3 on each side - these were the ch13 pieces).

Side strands :

Apply glue under the 3 side hair strands down to the ear. Glue down the middle strand first, with curl falling just in front of the ear, and pin in place. The 2 strands on either side of the middle strand will fall with their 2 curls above the middle strand curl. Glue and pin into place. Repeat on the other side.

Front bangs :

Start with the middle strand of the 5 front strands (bangs), gluing it centered on the forehead. Next glue the 2 outer strands. Because they are shorter, the curls will be higher on the forehead than the middle curl. Leave a little space for the last 2 strands to fit. Add more glue if needed to attach the final 2 strands of hair. The curls of these strands will lay on top of the other strands which are already glued down. Add glue and pin as needed. Allow time for the craft glue to dry, then carefully remove stick pins.

β€” Diaper Wrap :

Info :

Using Yarn Over (v-stitch). Using 1.5mm hook (same hook size as doll). Using White or Natural White yarn.

Start :

Start with Ch28, then join in a circle by making a sc into the beginning chain, being careful not to twist the row of chains. (Fig. 21) Place your marker and begin working in continuous rounds. Note: When you sew in your ends (after making the diaper wrap), you can make an invisible join with your starting tail.

Rnd 1-3 :

28sc (3 rounds) (Fig. 22) (28)

Info :

Leaving the marker in place, you will now change to Rows to form the crotch section. Note: Turning ch (ch1) will not be included in the stitch count, and the crotch rows will be designated with letters.

Row A :

BLO 8sc (skipping the rest of the round), ch1, turn (Fig. 23) (8)

Row B :

DEC, 4sc, DEC, ch1, turn (4)

Row C :

6sc, ch1, turn (6)

Row D :

Row I :

INC, 2sc, INC, ch1, turn (6)

Row J :

INC, 4sc, INC (Fig. 26) (8)

Finish :

Cut yarn, leaving a tail for sewing. Sew crotch piece to waistband using a whipstitch through the inside loop (Fig. 28) on the waistband and both loops on the crotch piece (leaving the loop to the outside exposed for later.) Be careful to center it (there will be 6sts on the waistband over each leg hole) (Fig. 27). Sew in ends.

Return :

Return to where your marker was, and continue with Round 4.

Rnd 4 :

Rnd 7-8 :

41sc (2 rounds) (41)

Rnd 9 :

FLO 41sc (Fig. 30) (41) Finish off with invisible join. Sew in ends. (Fig. 31)

Assembly :

With garment facing you (join on the starting round of chains on the waistband should be on the back side (see Fig. 32)). Take the right side and pinch it into creases. (Fig. 33) Using a bit of white yarn, sew through the creases from bottom to top and back again, to hold them in position. Pull the yarn tight and knot it, sew in the ends. (Fig. 34, 35, 36, 37, 38)

Assembly Halo :

Cut a piece of plastic canvas, cardboard (or other thin sturdy material) into a circle slightly smaller than the crocheted circles. Place the 2 crocheted circles back-to-back, use the yarn from the Metallic Gold circle to crochet through both loops of matching sc on both circles. When you reach about 2/3 of the way around, insert the plastic canvas piece between the 2 circles. Add a little fiber fill between the canvas piece and the Golden Yellow circle (back piece) to puff out the halo like a thin pillow if desired. Continue with sc around until the circles are fully sewn together. Finish off. Sew in ends.

Assembly Instructions

  • Using stick pins, fasten the middle section of the hair piece to the top of the head, center the 5 shorter strands in front, then glue the middle and pin each strand, gluing under each strand down to just above the curl and pinning in place until dry.
  • Attach the diaper wrap by sewing the crotch piece to the waistband using a whipstitch through the inside loop of the waistband and both loops on the crotch piece; center so there are 6sts over each leg hole and sew in ends.
  • Wet-block the straw bed: wet the straw bed, wring out excess, lay onto thick foam or Styrofoam, stretch each piece of straw straight and pin with stick pins and allow to dry completely before removing pins and finishing.
  • Construct the wooden manger by gluing two reinforced X-shaped craft stick bases and then gluing the short cut craft sticks to form the trough; allow glue to dry fully and optionally paint or stain.
  • Sew or crochet the metallic/golden halo circles together, insert plastic canvas backing and a small amount of fiber fill if desired, then attach the halo behind the head using small stitches or glue depending on placement preference.

Important Notes

  • πŸ’‘Use stitch markers to keep track of continuous rounds and where you started each round, especially for the straw bed and halo.
  • πŸ’‘Wet blocking the straw bed and pinning it on foam is required to tame the straw pieces and make the bed lay neatly; allow to dry fully overnight.
  • πŸ’‘Work with consistent tension and use the recommended small hooks; if your hook is splitting the yarn try a slightly larger hook to avoid splitting.

This Baby Jesus amigurumi set brings a handmade, heartfelt touch to your holiday nativity. It combines detailed small-hook crochet with simple craftwork to create a miniature display-ready piece you can enjoy for years. Follow the step-by-step photos and wet-blocking tips to achieve tidy straw, soft curls, and a sparkling halo. πŸ§Άβœ¨πŸ•ŠοΈ

FAQs

What size will the finished piece be?

The finished amigurumi measures approximately 5 inches (12-13 cm) long for the doll when using size 2 yarn and the specified hooks; the straw bed and manger proportions fit that size.

Can I use different yarn weights for this pattern?

Yes, but changing yarn weight will affect the final size and may require different hook sizes and larger craft sticks for the manger; adjust proportions and hook sizes consistently across all pieces.

Do I need prior crochet experience for this pattern?

This pattern is rated intermediate, so basic knowledge of crochet stitches (sc, inc, dec, BLO/FLO) and working in rounds and small hooks is recommended for best results.

How long does this project typically take to complete?

Most crocheters complete the full set, including making the manger and wet-blocking the straw bed, in about 8-10 hours, though time will vary by experience and drying time for blocking.
