About This Down On The Farm - Stack Toy Amigurumi Pattern

This pattern creates a stackable farm toy set including a hay-covered cone base, horse, cow, pig and rooster. Why You'll Love This Down On The Farm - Stack Toy Amigurumi Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because it combines simple amigurumi shapes with playful details that bring each animal to life. I enjoy how the stacked design creates an interactive toy that is fun to assemble and display. The hay-covered cone is one of my favorite features β€” it adds texture and a cheerful base for the animals. I also appreciate that the pattern is forgiving: you can adjust rounds or yarn choice to change scale and personality easily.

Switch Things Up

I love how easy it is to customize colors and create a whole family of animals by changing yarn shades and small details like eye placement or mane length.

To make a mini keychain version, use sport or fingering weight yarn with a smaller hook and reduce rounds where possible to shrink each piece proportionally.

I often swap the hay color for pastel shades to create a softer nursery set β€” pale pinks, mints and creams look lovely as alternatives to bright yellow.

If you want a sturdier toy for play, use a denser stuffing and tighter tension; for a squishier feel, go with softer stuffing and a slightly larger hook.

Try adding tiny removable accessories such as a crocheted scarf, a little saddle, or a felt flower for personality and play value.

I sometimes embroider different facial expressions β€” moving the eyes slightly closer or farther apart instantly changes the character's look and mood.

For an eco-friendly option, use recycled or cotton yarns and a biodegradable filler, and you can also skip the foam cone and make a crocheted cone insert instead.

To create a themed stack, make seasonal color palettes: autumn tones for fall, reds and greens for holiday displays, or pastels for springtime gifts.

I like to add wire inside legs for poseability in display pieces β€” this makes the animals more dynamic but is optional for toys for young children.

One of my favorite finishes is a subtle tufting of the hay or mane β€” trim yarn strands to different lengths for a natural, textured look that photographs beautifully.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

βœ— Skipping stitch markers at the start of rounds leads to lost stitch counts and uneven shaping; place a marker or use a contrasting yarn strand to mark the beginning of each round. βœ— Overstuffing the body rings causes the pieces not to slip over the cone smoothly; stuff gradually and test the ring length on the cone as you go. βœ— Not keeping consistent tension makes rings and heads uneven in size; maintain steady tension and check gauge periodically to ensure consistent sizing. βœ— Not sewing parts in the correct position creates a lopsided toy; pin pieces in place and compare to the photos before sewing securely.

Hay Strands: Cut several strands of Bright Yellow 6-1/2" long. (Hint: I wrap my yarn around a pack of Post-It Notes for the ideal length) Beg with outer rnd of strands, knot 1 strand of yarn in each fr lp of sts of Rnd 43. Knot 1 strand of yarn in each rem lp of sts of Rnds 37 - 42. Strands shouldn't need to be trimmed but that's up to you if you choose to do so.

Info :

Note: When working the Body Rings, the length of the ring should be long enough for the stuffed ring to go around the cone and have the ends meet without stretching the piece too much. If you need to work a couple of extra rnds or a couple less than what the instructions state, that's perfectly fine.

Assembly Instructions

  • Slip the Outer Cone Cover onto the Styrofoam cone and join Outer Cone Cover to the Cone Base by working through the last round of the base and the corresponding round of the cover (as in Round 37), then work the textured dc rounds (Rounds 38-43) and fasten off.
  • Insert the Inner Body into the Outer Body for the rooster and then whipstitch or single crochet around to close so the stuffed body will slip onto the cone top; stuff head and body and sew onto the cone.
  • Sew each animal's Head to the top of its Neck, then sew Neck to the Body Ring so the neck angles as shown in the photos, and position legs evenly around the bottom of the body ring before sewing.
  • Attach ears, horns, manes, tails and facial features according to the placement notes: e.g., horse ears to Round 18, rooster beak between Rounds 6 & 7, cow horns 2" apart, and pig ears so they "flop" out.
  • Knot and attach hay strands and rooster tail feathers by following the instructions for knotting strands through the outer loops of the cone and body ruffle rows; trim for shape and fullness.

Important Notes

  • πŸ’‘Use stitch markers or a contrasting yarn strand to mark the beginning of each round when working in continuous rounds for accurate stitch counts.
  • πŸ’‘Stuff pieces gradually while shaping to maintain natural curves and avoid overstuffing the body rings so they still slip onto the cone.
  • πŸ’‘Pin all parts in place and compare to the photos before final sewing to ensure correct placement and symmetry.
